About the picture
The winter of 2008 and 2009 has been a harsh one for Pennine hill farms with snow covering much of the land throughout February.Whilst walking with my border collie, Meg towards Holmfirth I decided to climb up towards a gate that was set high above the road. The view from the gate was one of reservoirs and the valley below. It was inspiring but also disconcerting. I was surrounded by farm land but there wasn't the sight or sound of an animal for miles around. The harsh winter and recent snow covering had kept the sheep in their lambing sheds. I turned to retrace my steps and caught site of the farm featured in this painting. The themes of the painting are emptyness and optimism. The setting sun and empty fields reflect the tough realities of a working farm and the fragililty of farming life whilst the title offers hope; somthing new around the corner. If you look closely you'll also find a tree swing next to the house. A symbol of hope and optimism.
